What to Use As a Control List For Argumentative Essay TopicsIf you're in a discussion with someone, and they accuse you of having no argumentative essay topics for your classes, then you know that the conversation is heading for a confrontation. One way to minimize the possibility of this happening is to create a 'control list.'
A control list is just a list of easy points to debate. It has two purposes: to make it easier for you to win the argument and to create a safe zone where you can begin your arguments with an eye toward trying to build a debate rather than a dispute. Let's take a look at the process involved in creating a control list. First, you need to identify all the terms and/or concepts that are important to your term argumentative essay topics. Try to come up with a list of vocabulary and concepts that are familiar to you, but may not be used by the person that's accusing you of not having a point to make. Then, try to come up with terms that are well known to you, but may not be used by them. Make a list of both. You will want to be able to discuss topics in the list that aren't used by either of you, and you will want to be able to discuss topics that they will be using against you. The next step is to come up with a well-reasoned and a well-supported, and a common sense argument based on those terms and concepts. This is very important, because once you have an argument that is well-supported by logic, you have a chance to win the argument. Before you engage in any debate, you need to have a well-reasoned argument. And to keep the debate from becoming a 'dispute,' you need to be able to reframe the argument from time to time. In addition to controlling the issue of the controllist of argumentative essay topics, you also need to be aware of the problems that a bad argument can create. Arguments may get lost in the detail, or they may become too abstract. Arguments are like bullets: the better you can aim them, the better you will do. You also need to be aware of the importance of communicating your argument. There is nothing worse than arguing in a meeting and not communicating your thoughts at all. You may be so focused on what you are arguing, you fail to notice that there is another person listening to the conversation. Finally, you need to be aware of the fact that the control list is not permanent. Although you may put it down for later, and while you are in the midst of writing your essay, you can come back to it if you feel that it needs to be reworded or re-analyzed. Remember, the control list is not a long-term solution for your argumentative essay topics, it is simply a tool to help you avoid arguments that turn into disputes. Once you have established a good foundation, and you are armed with knowledge about how to use control lists to your advantage, you will soon find yourself arguing effectively in every conversation that you are in.
